With decades of experience in software architecture and development, Paul’s passion for better software consulting and development led him to found PHD Solutions in 2013.
Paul thrives on problem-solving and has expertly crafted solutions in the fields of transportation & logistics, inventory control, image recognition systems, 2D and 3D scanning solutions and many more. These solutions have been deployed on many different form factors, from servers to user workstations, and from mass-produced phones to completely custom-built mobile hardware. Many of his solutions are used by field service workers and in logistics warehouses across Canada on a daily basis.
When Paul is not busy architecting intelligent software solutions, he loves spending time with his lovely wife and 3 children – or, when he needs some much deserved quiet time, you’ll likely find him down by the river fly-casting for trout.
Jonathan Malda
PARTNER
An accomplished Professional Engineer, Jonathan fell in love with software solutions over 20 years ago while having the opportunity to develop applications for The Bata Shoe Museum, and George Weston Limited.
Jonathan’s vast experience includes architecting scalable enterprise software solutions that are used in a variety of markets including transportation, direct-store-delivery, claims processing, warehousing, and kiosks. Jonathan is highly skilled at working with people, understanding their business needs, and providing value through the efficient capture of data and the processing and presentation of that data to enable better business decisions.
When Jonathan is not busy leading client solutions, he can be found around a campfire with his family, flying remote controlled planes, or building dry stone walls.
Laura van Houwelingen
PRODUCT ADMINISTRATION
Laura brings tremendous skill and experience to the PHD Solutions team in Integrated Business Planning, financial analysis and project management.
Her ability to funnel a wide range of information into actionable goals and executables, with strong communication skills, is integral to our intelligent software solutions. She is a key part of our Project Management team and our QA testing.
When not at work or spending time with her family, Laura can be found touring around the city on her road bike.
Michael Patton
SOFTWARE ENGINEER
Michael’s enthusiasm for new challenges and his unique perspective to problem solving are valuable in finding intelligent solutions for clients.
With over a decade of experience as a Software Engineer, Michael’s impressive resume includes experience designing and implementing military training simulations, machine automation, and 3D camera technology. He has successfully worked with customers from requirements gathering to overseeing installation and providing training to end users.
At PHD Solutions, Michael marries his extensive knowledge of 3D mathematics together with systems level programming to create some truly amazing solutions.
Outside of the office, Michael enjoys playing strategy games, reading, and brushing up on his world history knowledge.
Cesar Pereira
SOFTWARE DEVELOPER
Cesar has strong development experience and great enthusiasm for tackling new challenges and collaborating on projects.
Arriving in Canada fairly recently from Brazil, Cesar brings 10 years of experience which includes designing, developing, and maintaining secure, scalable IT solutions in the Oil & Gas, Finance, Telecommunication, and Municipal Government sectors. His application experience ranges from simple web management web systems to complete IT infrastructure and systems necessary to run a refining plant.
When Cesar steps out from his natural habitat (behind a computer monitor!) he loves exploring the great North with his family, gaming, or engaging in a friendly soccer match.
Luis Souza
FULL STACK DEVELOPER
Over 20 years experience in application, mobile, and web development.
Built applications for banking, health management, insurance, human resources, retail and more using solutions with IoT, AR, and Face Recognition. Education in Business Management, Mobile Application, and Project Management.
When not solving a professional daily challenge, or having some fun out in a beach or park with his wife and son, you can find him jogging or walking around.
Dwain Browne

Dwain is a self-proclaimed computer geek who possesses a strong enthusiasm for technology and software development.
Dwain is passionate about helping businesses and individuals reach their maximum potential. His expertise lies at the intersection of business and technology. He is particularly focused on cloud technologies, including Azure, Google Cloud, and AWS, as well as scaling large systems. A lifelong learner, Dwain is dedicated to assisting others in achieving their objectives.
Jacob Crewe

Jacob is a dedicated software engineering student currently in his 4th year of studies at TMU (Toronto Metropolitan University).
Jacob’s schooling has allowed him to gain a solid foundation in computer science principles, software development methodologies, and problem-solving techniques. Throughout his software engineering journey, he aims to continuously learn and adapt to emerging technologies and industry trends. When Jacob is not assisting in the latest project he can be found playing video games or going out with friends.
